If you’re only a casual observer of Nascar, then there is a good chance that you aren’t entirely aware of the different series and most importantly, what they mean to the sport. Maybe you simply turn it on every Sunday morning just to watch the race, and at some point, you decided that you wanted to learn a little more about it. Whether it’s for your own amusement, or to impress some friends, you need to know a bit more about the different Nascar series and what they mean. Don’t worry, we aren’t going to list them all, but we’re going to go over some of the most important Nascar series, which is going to give you an outstanding starting point.
Different Nascar Series:
Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series
This is the one race that you hear the most about, and you may have heard it referred to as the ‘Cup Series’. This is the top race for the National Association for Stock Car Racing, and the current sponsor just happens to be Monster Energy. In 1949, this started as the ‘Strictly Stock’ series, and from the 50’s to the 70’s it was the Grand National series. Then it became the Winston Cup Series, the Nextel Cup, Sprint Cup, and finally Monster Energy. As you can see, the name changes a lot, but the spirit remains the same. During this series the championship utilizes a point system, just like other Nascar races. The points awarded are done so according to the finishing position, though anyone trailing the first three positions will always be awarded a point, meaning a racer in last place can potentially progress to the championship if they have accumulated enough points beforehand.
Xfinity Series
Unlike the Monster Energy series, this one is considered to be more of a proving ground for the drivers that want to head to the Monster Energy Cup. For the most part, the Xfinity is held in the same venue as the Monster Energy NASCAR cup to ensure that fans are able to attend both events. Like the Monster Energy Cup, this one went by several different names, originally being called the Budweiser Late Model Sportsman Series, and changing several times up to 2014.
Camping World Truck Series
This race is presented by Craftsman, and it’s a pickup truck racing series. This is the only race in all of NASCAR to feature modified production pickup trucks, and it’s one of three national divisions of NASCAR. It is considered third tier behind Xfinity and Monster Energy.
Whelen Modified Tour
Formerly the NASCAR Winston Modified Tour and NASCAR Featherlite Modified Series, this is in the Modified Division, this division being the oldest in all of NASCAR. It is also the only open-wheeled division sanctioned by NASCAR, with most tour events held in the Northeastern United States. Normally, these are held on short oval paved tracks, but there have been races that involved larger ovals and road courses. NASCAR isn’t terribly complicated; there are multiple tiers and entry points to every series, and hopefully, with this guide, and several others, you will be able to get a handle on how the different series work. Most importantly, Sunday morning races will make a lot more sense.
